Studies on Serum Lipids in Koreans

Abstract
The present paper attempts to provide the bases for more precise evaluation of serum lipid and lipoprotein abnormalities in Koreans with various diseases. For this purpose, we have measured the blood serum concentration of total lipid, triglyceride, cholesterol and phospholipid in 130 healthy persons. Also, the serum lipoprotein patterns were separated by agarose gel electrophoresis, stained by oil red 0. and a quantitative determination was made in each.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. The mean serum lipid values of normal Koreans were 496.2¡¾93.1mg% for total lipid, 126.0¡¾33.9mg% for triglyceride, 148.3¡¾36.lmg% for cholesterol and 154.2¡¾39.41ng% for phospholipid.
2. In general the concentration of total serum lipid was higher in man than in woman and was increased with age. In woman the serum triglyceride and cholesterol concentration were progressively increased with age, while in man those were reached peak in 5th decade and decreased thereafter.
3. The serum lipoprotein was fractionated into, pre-p-, and a-lipoprotein and their mean values were 231.7¡¾43.6mg%, 91.7¡¾37.7mg%, and 173.1¡¾43.2mg%, respectively.
